How is NAD+ classified and what is its structure?

NAD+ is a dinucleotide: an adenine nucleotide and a nicotinamide nucleotide joined through their phosphate groups. The molecule cycles between oxidised (NAD+) and reduced (NADH) forms, which is the basis of its role in cellular redox chemistry.

How are NAD+’s roles studied in research?

Beyond redox reactions, NAD+ is consumed as a substrate by sirtuin deacylases, PARP DNA-repair enzymes and the NADase CD38, linking its availability to signalling and genome-maintenance research. Cellular NAD+ is replenished mainly through the NAMPT-dependent salvage pathway, a heavily studied node in metabolism research.
