What Is PT-141?

PT-141 — also written PT 141 or PT141, and known by the research name bremelanotide — is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide derived from the melanocortin peptide family. In the literature it is grouped with the melanocortin-agonist research peptides. An agonist is a molecule that activates a receptor.

Mechanism studied in research

Published pharmacology characterises PT-141 as an agonist at the central melanocortin receptors:

• MC3R — a melanocortin receptor expressed largely in the central nervous system.
• MC4R — a central melanocortin receptor studied in neural and autonomic signalling.

Research describes PT-141 as activating these CNS-expressed melanocortin receptors, and laboratories use it as a reference melanocortin agonist in receptor-signalling studies.
